It seems like The Devil's Blood has already inspired others (musically and visually)...

Check the "roots", not just "The Devil's Blood"! But indeed, The Devil's Blood is really great band.

Lord of Doubts - S/T (Sekt Ov Gnosis)
By Janet Willis
08July2010

This is yet another THC and Occult inspired stoner doom band that managed to blow my way and the buzz is totally welcome I must say. Lord of Doubts is a yet another strong Russian/slavic band to crawl out of the shadows and slime and issue havoc on our thirsty ears for the best in heavy psychedelic tinged stoner/sludge doom.

I always get annoyed when reviews cite Electric Wizard as an obvious hearable influence as half the time it’s true and the other half is just a generic way of labeling a sound to sell the album on us poor bastards that have to choose our cash spenditures a bit more wisely and only want the best for the $. Well, I do my best reviews when I’m NOT trying to review the album and this one instantly struck me as an honest similarity in sound to Electric Wizard on “Witchcult Today”, especially in some of the vocals and samples from cult/classic occult B films and a tinge of LSD and retro sound but still unmistakably current doom. You really can’t deny the similarity between this vocalist and J.O. of Electric Wizard, but then again I’ve been listening to them for so damn long that I could pick them out of a line-up almost on riff and hook alone.

If you’re in the mood for throwing support to a great indie label and are Jonesing for an Electric Wizard fix because it’s been a while since “Witchcult Today” than absolutely pick this bastard up and crank the S.O.B. as loud as mechanically possible. I just got this thing the other day and it’s so infectious that I’m running a bongload fever and haven’t even had a smoke or my famous brownies as of late. That hopefully is enough to spark a few to venture into this realm and light up upon listening. Truly heavy and riffalicious stoner doom delights form the Garden of Hell.

Lord Of Doubts are from Russia and at least (everybody cheer) they are NOT another My Dying Bride clone nor do they have any Goth-Doom tendencies at all. I actually got told from a good source its only been the last couple of years that more Traditional Doom Metal and Stoner Doom has began to make a appearance in Russia. Still its a mystery as to why the Russians have always been so obsessed with the Gothic side of the Doom Metal genre so hearing Lord Of Doubts makes a refreshing change even if is a predictable one. The band doesn't hide the fact they are heavily influenced by dope, the occult and obviously bands like Electric Wizard. Its so obvious in fact, that comparing them with any other band would be totally misleading as they sound like "Witchcult Today" era Wizard in the riffs and the vocals. The vocalist here is almost identical to Jus Oborn but rather than being a rip-off, they put their own spin on the sounds that were invented by Electric Wizard but of course some will be put off by the similarity but not me.
Opening track, "Temple Of The Riff" is like sonic, psychedelic slime seeping its way out of the speakers. The riffs are massive, hypnotic and turning, churning continually building layers upon each movement or section of the chord progression. Just like the very best of Electric Wizard's material, its crushing heaviness all the way but also very infectious so the long running times of most of the tracks never seem that drawn out at all. There is only 6 songs taking up close to 50 minutes but its a very quick 50 minutes listening to this monster of a album. I hate to mention EW once again but Lord Of Doubts also use samples from cult horror films to enhance the morbid, drug induced vibe of the tracks and it succeeds in creating a mood and a twisted vibe throughout. If you have been listening to this style of Doom as long as i have, some of it is horribly cliched especially in the song titles like "Satan's Magick Smoke" for example but thankfully the actual music is killer enough to make forget about such cheesy elements.
Highlights apart from the crushing ambiance of the album opener include "Endless Slumber" and the album closer titled "Electric World" which is literally has LSD in the grooves and this band of Russian riff freaks are not weak in that department. The entire album churns out infectious riff after riff and the laid back Psychedelic vibe keeps the dense, smoke filled atmosphere at its most mesmerizing right up to the last earth-moving notes. While the band is seriously lacking in originality, they are bursting with a passion for volume and hellish riff worship and you got to admire that. The label they are on also deserves your support, "Sekt Ov Gnosis" seems to have their heart in the right place and have a exciting future in front of them if this release is anything to go by. The conclusion i reached with the Lord Of Doubts debut is they simply have the riffs but no originality as yet. However, this self-titled album shows un-tapped potential that shows the band could be a force in the underground within a year or two. They just need to break out of the Electric Wizard mold somewhat, don't get me wrong on this though. I love EW and i seriously dig Lord Of Doubts but its a little too much like Jus and Company. There is only one EW and there should be only one Lord Of Doubts but this is a hell of a killer release anyway and one that will blow the minds of Stoner-Doom freaks everywhere. Load your bongs for this one, you wont be disappointed too much. 8/10

Now that the Iron Curtain has fallen down, we all know that it wasn't a meteor in Tunguska but, depending on your views on the World, either a rather misplaced attempt at summoning Azathoth or a spaceship with a bad landing timing .

Any ways, it was an event that brought something huge to Russia, namely an Electric Wizard record. Locked and studied by the USSR scientists for years, it ended in the hands of 3 guys from Moscow and they've learnt their lesson well. To make it short : this first release of Lord Of Doubts is as mystical and smoked-out as the best of what Jus Osborn can produce if provided with enough morrocan weed to stone Ego the Living Planet out of orbit.

Brooding psychedelic riffing, down-tempo rhythm section (in order to go THAT slow on a Stoner/Doom record, they must certainly have smoked the complete frankincense stock out of the closest orthodox church near their rehearsal place) and all along, a drugged voice preaching the Gospel of Doom like if the Inquisition were once again unleashed.

But Lord Of Doubts is not an Electric Wizard copycat. To start with, they're less Heavy and more psychedelic. They're also less muddy, and don't go as strong on the fuzz-pedal as the english ritualists (a flaw that Osborn should start to take into consideration when composing). The best part? Lord Of Doubts just know how to carve into your mind a great chorus. The kind of chorus you cannot forget after having heard it just once - no one can resist the call of Temple Of The Riff : not only it has the coolest title EVER, but it has also some of the best lines since Witchcult Today). And every song featured here has a great chorus.

Right after the excellent demo from The Moon Mistress, Lord Of Doubts prove that you can create some stunningly good Stoner/Doom shite, even when coming from a country more renowned for its Funeral/Gothic/Death Doom scene. Now you too will know that the Mountains of Mars have been transferred in a frozen tundra, and you'll 'come to the altar', 'come to the Temple of the Riff'.
