View Full Version : Oaken Throne zine

Well, after several delays, I'm finally putting my neck on the small BM zine chopping block. My zine is called Oaken Throne and Issue #1 features extensive interviews with AntaeuS, Arkhon Infaustus, Destroyer 666 and Manticore. Also included are select CD, vinyl and demo reviews.
Issue #1 (300 copies) features a black with silver-print silk-screened cover (Please accept my apology, I have not picked them up yet, and I have no scanner...). The internal pages are black and white photocopy. It is 11x17 halved length-wise for something a little different...
I am picking them up a week from Thursday. I will then fly to New York for the Gods of Blasphemy Festival (If interested please go ahead and write and I will mail your copy out to you as soon as I return from New York.).
Prices are $5 for the US and $8 for everywhere else... Regarding the overseas rates, I hate to ask for $8, but with overseas postage I'll probably just be breaking even. Oaken Throne is not a "money-making" endeavor. Yes, if I make some money that would be great, but any money made from the sale of Issue #1 goes towards printing Issue #2 which is being compiled...Look for interviews with Malign, Khisanth (If I can find the tape...), Hell Militia, Anaal Nathrakh and maybe one or two more - Mr. St. Vincent get in touch!
Send well-hidden cash to:

In closing, if anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to PM me...Also, if enough interest is shown we will be printing limited batches of t-shirts, patches and buttons to help spread the plague...
You bringing any copies to the NY show by chance?
so demos, promos and other shit for reviews can be sent on this address as well? :

Accela,
Yes, I will be bringing about 100 copies to New York...Might sound silly, but Mr. MkM, get your autograph pen ready! HA!
Speaking of that, are autographs anti-BM? I've never known any BM releases to be autographed or anything, unless someone has kindly donated assorted bodily fluids...
Aris,
Yes, you can send me demos and promos to that address. I might be moving in a few months, but if I do I will have my mail forwarded to me...
Hand-numbered LPs and/or blood stained covers are enough imo. Autographs have nothing to do with BM imo!
Ok I will pick one up at the show then.

Damn, I've slipped to the third page of this Forum...Must be hectic out there...Funny, there are 280-something people in this Forum and I've only had a handful of people PM/Email concerning Oaken Throne...Interesting...
So, far everyone that has bought Oaken Throne has been pleased...To you, I want to say "Thank you" for your support! Thank you to Jose and Archgoat for posting kind words in this Forum! Hails to you!!!
For information purposes:
-Jersey Devil Distro now has copies (10) and AJNA Offensive will have copies (5) within a week or so-
Okay, ranting aside, I will be moving within the next two months. My mail will be forwarded to my new address, which I will post when I know it. Right now, I'm sending to US via First Class and it is taking about three to four days. Internationally, via Air Mail, is taking about 10 to 12 days or so. Please understand with the move, if you order during that time, that it might take a little longer for me to get a copy to you...Your patience is appreciated...
I concur, monsewers and maddamnweasels! This is a really nice and uniquely formatted magazine. Great interviews, much enjoyed!

get used to that ;) you'd not like to know my stats
doing a zine these days & printing more than 100 copies seems like "?!"
not too surprised about the feedback in general
did u do flyers john?
the zine is really good I have to say, I hope it will be more "condensed" in the upcoming issue"
smaller font & even more to read
any deadline for the next one?
jmincemoyer

Mr. MkM,
No, we did not do any flyers...I guess we're learning as we go...Thank you for the idea...I'll try to do something on that level for Issue #2...I must say that I'm a little disappointed. I would have thought more people would show interest, but then again, it is a new zine, it is "print" and it is not "free"...Whatever happens though, I'm glad that I have done it...So far I've given away more complimentary copies then I've sold, but that is okay...
Condensed? I don't know about a smaller font, but there might be a lot more to read...Actually, #2 might be rather large considering what I've already compiled. Of course, if I do not sell out of #1 then #2 might be hard to produce. But, if everything works out there will be an extensive Hell Militia intie with LSK, Malign, Khisanth, and two surprises...I'm honored to be working with them...I've asked Tyler Davis to do an Atomizer interview, and after meeting him in New York, Mr. Deathymn will hopefully produce an informative Watain article! Thing is though, I'm trying to concentrate on a few bands, but I also want things to be somewhat timely...So, we'll see...The Malign interview is great...Mork taught me a thing or two...I would like to do a Black Lodge interview as well...So many good releases, not enough money...
Right now there is no deadline for the next issue...Because of my move and everything...I would like to shoot for a late winter or early spring release...
Once again, thanks for your support!

Mr. Carven,
You KILL me, but you are so right - only TRUE ethereal Black Metal is real!
Okay, not trying to toot my "own" horn, this is what Satanael from Manticore had to say about Oaken Throne:
John,
Just pulled Oaken Throne out of the mail and it's fucking impressive. Right off the bat it makes one of the strongest visual impressions of anything printed I've seen in years and I'm not saying this to brown-nose. Your interviews are done in a manner that's much more interesting than the usual:
Oaken Throne: Haillzzzz hell-slaughter warrior!!! 666! What makes your band so elite?
Count Lord Goat Humper: Argh! We are the hell kommand goat militia of Satan's unholy hell goat kommand... er, um, militia. Argh!
...definitely none of that in your zine. I'm willing to bet it becomes a collectors item in no time.
There is a merch list on the back cover...any of it available now or coming soon?
Satanael
To Mr. Archgoat and Mr. Deathymn if you read this: HELL TANK HAILS!!!

I need some help...This is more directed towards the Bahimiron horde, Mr. Deathymn and other(s) on this side of the Atlantic.
I am sure that some of you may not give a shit, but does anyone know how to get in touch with Khisanth? I was going to feature an interview with them in Issue #2 of Oaken Throne, but I've lost the tape...Sucks too, it was a good interview...Anyway, do any of you know/correspond with Daemon. I contacted Killjoy, but he has heard nothing from/or about them...Their email account is dead...Any information/help would be appreciated. Thank you...
John
havent seen mr D in years, could always attempt to try redstream, maybe they would know
Sorry sir. not too much help with Kzanth... looking forward to your zine ... as everyone will tell you on this site, doing a zine is a losing proposition... to continue it basically means you have a job and a severe need to stay poor... carry on as long as you can, and then start attaching dead birds to your issues to dissuade persons from a attaining it - ancient d.thus trick...

Thanks to those that responded. And Mr. Archgoat, I have emailed Pat at Red Stream...Thanks for the lead...
So, Mr. Blaash would be right for the moment...Right now I'm still $400 in the hole from this endeavor, but I'm going to forge ahead (Before I forget, I want to thank everyone who has bought a copy and also those who have shown interest or helped me in any way, shape or form.).
Issue No. 2 is taking shape and should feature:
Anaal Nathrakh
Atomizer
Hell Militia
Ludicra
Malign
Watain (If all works out...)
If Atomizer and Watain fall through, which I hope they do not, then I'll just go with the original four...
No. 2 will be bigger than Issue No. 1, but I think it better to keep things as "fresh" as possible...
No. 3, if I make it that far, should feature Black Lodge (Saint Vincent I appreciate your patience...) and others...Maybe Vorkreist if they would be willing...But that will be for next summer/early fall.
Thanks for the dead bird idea...I thought about razor blades for Issue No. 1 in celebration of AntaeuS, but the possiblilty of severe legal ramifications killed that idea...
HELL TANK HAILS!
John
heh.
The dead bird idea was done, courtesy of mr. arioch returning somethign to that effect with an interview.
razors were sent with the first 50 of dthvs 2, and i put mine to damn good use...
other then that. i think an oblong package has arrived at the doorstep that seems to be an oaken throne item. will have to check it.

Like others have noted, the first thing that stuck out about the zine was the size/shape. I've never seen a zine like that before. It definitely catches your attention.
Overall, the quality of the writing is above standard, especially for a debut issue. You can tell John spent alot of time putting this zine together (from content to appearance).
My only gripe would be that, while I understand the quality over quanity aspect, I would like to see more material to read. I re-read it twice and that pretty much covered it (vs a few other zines out there that I can re-read a dozen times and still not really "cover" everything).
Looking forward to #2!

To anyone interested in Oaken Throne (Yes, I still have plenty of copies...). I will be moving (again) within the next two weeks to Philadelphia. I will post my new address once I receive one...I will have my mail forwarded...
To everyone that has bought or expressed interest in Oaken Throne - THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST AND ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Although I have not sold very many copies I am proud with what Ben and I have accomplished...I've had readers from the US, Australia, Canada, Europe and the UK contact me to let me know what they thought of Issue #1. So far, every comment has been positive!
Some people, a chosen few, have expressed interest in the t-shirts. I thought I would have sold more copies of Oaken Throne by now, but I have not...I am still in debt to the printer, but hopefully will have that paid off within a month or so...Once that is done we plan on printing a limited run of t-shirts...If anyone is interested in this PM me with your address, size, etc., in the next few months.
Oaken Throne #2 out late spring/early summer! Extensive interviews with Malign, Hell Militia, Atomizer and Watain!

For those that are interested:
Oaken Throne #2 is nearing completion. I have some more writing to do, but we are almost there. Issue #2 is going to feature Atomizer, Hell Militia, Malign and Watain. It will also feature more select reviews. Once done, Ben will do the layout. A new twist at Oaken Throne, I have enlisted the help of two underground writers of that I hold in high regard...One has penned the Atomizer article and the other has penned the Watain article. Both are excellent works in my opinion...I hope you will agree. They will be properly introduced in my editorial.
Some other exciting new possible developments are on the horizon...
One, works are underway to do a limited batch of t-shirts (100) (For those that are wondering why we did not produce any for Issue #1 it is because of monetary issues. We did have interest, but my financial situation would not allow us to print them. That has changed and we are planning to proceed with this endeavor.). The shirts will be $12 US/$15 World postage paid. Right now, plan is to have black shirts with silver print...We should have these within a few weeks. If you are interested please get in touch with me via PM...Do not send any money! Please wait until we have them in our possession. More than likely because of mailing issues, t-shirt buyers will be dealing with Ben, but get in touch with me first...
Two, if everything works out will will be re-releasing a six-song tape/CDr of old Leviathan (US) material. I would like to do a tape, but it might have to be CDr because of cost. I would like to get opinion on this. Cassettes seem to be a dying medium and we would like to help keep the old flame alive...So, give me your thoughts.
Any other questions or comments please let me know...
For those that bought Oaken Throne #1 thank you again for your support and your comments.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely yours,
John Mincemoyer
Oaken Throne Editor

Why not simply record the cd-r unto tape? or am i missing something?

Yes, you missed my point, but maybe I was vague. I was asking people to gauge their reaction as to whether I should do tapes or CDrs. Most people on this Forum, at least from several posts I have read, do not like CDrs, but cassettes are not as cost-effective...Whatever, we have decided to go the cassette route even though it will cost more to produce...

To All,
Unfortunately, Ben and I have run into some snags--financial snags--regarding Oaken Throne. Print costs has risen and my current living situation is sort of fucked.
With all of that said, I would like to gauge further interest in Oaken Throne with the respect to advertisers. In No. 1 I contacted people/distros that I felt worthy of attention. Because I wanted to be noble I did not ask for any money for the ads. Maybe this was the wrong approach, but it is done. Now with the situation at present, No. 2 is basically finished, I am asking distros/labels/zines that might be interested in running an ad in Oaken Throne No. 2 to get in touch. We have now added a quarter-page ad as well as the inside front cover for a dedicated full-page ad. The prices are cheap--Ben has come up with an ad scale. All ad money submitted goes to take care of printing...With respect to what we do, please, no NS-oriented "Life" Metal.
Seemingly, you would think that this thread, which now has over 1300 hits, would draw some interest to my zine and that we should have been able to sell out of our initial print run of 300. 300 against 1300+...Interesting, but not the case. Some people complained about the price, considering the "size," but in all honesty, for every copy I mailed in America we only made $1.35 after printing and postage. In most cases, I might have made $1.75 to $2.25 per copy sent to Europe, but in a lot of cases I lost money considering postage rates are so high.
I am not complaining. We did No. 1 and it met with praise--to you that gave us praise, thank you. Maybe there was some trepidation for the fact that this was our first issue, which I can understand to a certain degree. I am not whining, it is just frustrating that life is dealing me a lot of shit at the moment.
I want to get No. 2 out this year--Hell Militia is long overdue for their (our) conversation and Wrath from Averse Sefira wrote a killer Watain article. Bane submitted a great Atomizer article and I stumbled through thick and thin with Mork from the mighty Malign...Thus, No. 2 has somewhat grown...Also, No. 2 will have a six-song Leviathan demo tape as a bonus.
Thanks for your time and to everyone that has shown interest, thank you.
HailHorrorJose

people are poor and lazy and procrastinate...you have to take that into consideration hehe
i dont think you can sell 300 zines in one forum man...
flyers and advertising other places as well would help, also sell them at gigs if you can...
sucks about the living situation,im in the same boat which is delaying the hell out of my zine

10-07-04, 21:51
Yes, I am starting to learn all of this...I would have thought that this Forum, above others, would be able to support 300 zines, but I guess I overestimated people's desire, or lack thereof, for printed matter...But, we'll soldier on...Eventually No. 2 will rear its head...I'm a little dismayed that since I got help with this issue that Wrath and Bane are forced to wait to see their contributions...

10-08-04, 20:13
To All,
I want to apologize, especially to Bane and Wrath, for the delays that we've encountered with Oaken Throne No. 2. Everyone's patience is much appreciated.
With that said, we've put up a small, bare bones website, not to supplant the print zine, but something like a supplement. If you're interested, especially with possible advertising for No. 2, please visit http://www.benwestdesign/oakenthrone.
Thank you.
To keep you abreast of things, I am waiting on answers back from Crebain and Leviathan. I am also in the process of interviewing Secrets of the Moon. So, No. 2 is shaping up to be bigger than No. 1. Features will be: Hell Militia, Malign, Watain, Atomizer, Ludicra, Crebain, Leviathan, Gospel of the Horns, Secrets of the Moon...Plus some reviews....
Speaking of reviews, I just got the new Arkhon Infaustus, Perdition Insanibilis, which is awesome! Hails to the Grand Torturer and the Infaustus wrecking crew!

i think 100 copies for a print zine is about right. most of mine i just gave away, and im sure the next issue will be even less spread.
